Genette Salgado S/S '12

I realize i'm a little tardy to the party on this one, but any chance to highlight some great, local talent, and i'm on board! Genette Salgado is a designer of versatility, flare, and sophistication, key components that contribute to a formula for success. She recently showcased her latest collection, Not Fade Away, at Western Canada Fashion Week (which, by the way, is now the third largest fashion week in Canada), and did not disappoint!

With a heavy promotional campaign leading up to the show, including a lovely preview that I was able to attend at the Duchess Bake Shop, Salgado presented a whimsical collection reminiscent of a lovely dream filled with pastel florals and an effervescent philosophy. I asked Salgado what her inspiration was behind this season's collection, and she stated that much of it came from the latter part of the 1940's with the emergence of Dior's "New Look".

"With women's dress being limited and stifled during WWII, the 'New Look' brought with it a return to femininity and glorified women's bodies once again."
Salgado also mentioned that she derived much of her inspiration from street style blogs, with one in particular - Ari Seth Cohen's, "Advanced Style".

"It's about women that are so meticulous in their appearance and confident-imagining how they might have dressed in their 20's, 30's, and 40's."
To my surprise and great pleasure, Salgado also decided to dabble a little in menswear this season, with a great ensemble that was featured towards the end of her show. Fashion is so often made and geared towards the woman's body; it's nice to see upcoming designers taking a risk and making something for the boys every once in a while!

Check out the photos from her preview party and runway show below! The detailed appliques, colour palette, and sweet sophistication are truly aspects for any fashionista to faun over for the upcoming season!
