Ok! So it was a pretty busy week at the office, and us busy little bees had a lot to work on! But busy is good! Earlier this week, Toronto experienced a record high in temperature (of course), resulting in weather typical of a tropical rainforest. I kid you not, the air was that thick. In case you ever need to know, wearing thick cotton pants, a long sleeved shirt and a vest is not the smartest of ideas. Making the decision to embark on a Street Style quest during the middle of the work day (when NO ONE is out) in +30 weather? Also not a good idea. Other highlights include:
1. Earlier in the week, I got assigned by one of my editors to interview one of the men behind Europe's highest grossing men's fragrance. Obviously, I accepted with much enthusiasm and joy, as this was an opportunity I just could not pass up. I called into Paris to talk to a man named Francis, who was responsible, right out of perfume school, for concocting one of Europe's most successful fragrances to date, Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier. The initial start up was a bit stressful as it took me a couple minutes to figure out the international codes and such (the phone number looked more like a serial bar code than anything), but all went well. I was surprised to hear how similar and aligned the fragrance industry is to the fashion industry, as many of the procedures follow similar processes. Francis was super interesting to talk to and gave a really great interview. I don't want to give anything away, but stick around to read my interview with him later on!
2. I also got the opportunity to talk to one of the online founders of Indochino, an online sensation that has seen tremendous growth over a very short amount of time. Basically, they are a company that was started by two University of Victoria students who had troublesome experiences with finding a proper fitting suit. As a result, they formed Indochino, an online platform used to offer consumers mass production of custom-made suits. That sentence, in and of itself, is an oxymoron. Customization and mass production seem to be at polar opposites of the spectrum, yet here they are, merged together to create a very unique business. These are some very intelligent guys (they even managed to get former Yahoo! president, Jeff Mallett, to be on their board of directors), with a great story and fun, insightful personalities. Look for that interview coming soon, as well!
