How to Spruce Up Dad's Look!

Father's Day approaches! If you haven't a clue of what to get your old man for this celebratory day, have no fear! Check out my article for men's fashion and lifestyle magazine, SHARP, outlining sartorial pieces that will help Dad show the world how great he is on the inside and outside! You can view the article on the website here, or below!

THE PANAMA
Sure, you might see the kids wearing them these days. They call it cool, we call it premature. The Panama is earned, a badge symbolizing wisdom and masculine sophistication. Hailing from Ecuador, these classic straw hats come in a variety of styles and boast an impressive pedigree, having graced the crowns of Theodore Roosevelt, Sean Connery, and other members of society's leading men. Wear them on your days off, relaxing on the beach or on a casual stroll through the park. A set of handsome wrinkles and a life full of learned lessons are required to pull this off.

BRIGHT SOCKS
There's something about a pair of electric blue socks peeking from underneath a pair of pants that gets us giddy. Be it emerald green, fuschia, or poppy red, a pair of bright socks can do wonders to your old man's look by adding a pop of color in an unexpected place. We prefer bold solids, but they come in a variety of patterns that do the job just as well. The great thing about them is that they do not politely ask; they demand an audience. Give your pops a pair of these for a flash of color and fun!

THE POCKET SQUARE
Remind dad that, sometimes, all an outfit needs is a small detail to spruce it up. The right details give you the ability to inject a type of flare that takes your look from moderate to exquisite. Pocket squares are that finishing touch. Whether you stuff them loosely or fold them neatly, they look sharp and dandy either way. (Drakes)

THE SCARF
A scarf may not be the first item one thinks of during the summer, but this underrated accessory is actually very versatile throughout the year, ranging from thick wool textures in the winter to feathery-light linens in the summer. We're not saying to go out and buy your father an Hermès losange or anything (although, that would be absolutely amazing if you did), but at least give it a try. Opt for a linen or light cotton for the evenings that he can wrap around his neck in the laissez-faire fashion that is characteristic of his youth. There are a variety of ways that you can tie your scarf that will leave you looking refined and great! Follow this link to learn how! (Club Monaco)

RAY-BANS
When it comes to dad, we think it more appropriate to stick to a classic aesthetic with a couple tweaks. Ray Ban is one of those companies that has withstood the test of time. Go with a wayfarer or aviator – they're simple, yet effective. They'll make your dad look suave and manly, but also understated and relaxed. Perfect for Father's Day weekend!

FRAMES
A good pair of frames can make a night and day difference when done the right way. They're a fun way to transform your normal look, ranging from distinguished to whimsical to edgy, depending on the style of the frame. It's important to choose a frame that a) suits his personality, and b) suits his face. We generally tend to go with an “opposites attract” mantra, pairing circular frames with more square and rectangular faces, and vice versa. We're digging these frames courtesy of eyewear extroadinaire, Persol.

BOAT SHOES
Commonly known as a “boat” or “deck” shoe, these type of kicks provide both style and utility (hey, it's not often that happens in this industry!) Functionality aside, these shoes are great for a leisure amble during the hot summer months, as they work perfectly when coupled with a pair of good shorts or rolled up trousers—though, remind your father of the dangers of ‘hitching.’ Those pants and shorts best stay below the navel. THE VEST
We love vests (also known as a gilet or waistcoat). They're stylish, refined, and also quite flattering. We understand that gravity develops a cruel sense of humor as we get older, and a man's torso is rarely privy to its tricks. Vests can be great for keeping everything neatly tucked away when you've had one too many beers. By the very nature of their cut, they can give off a V-shaped illusion that broadens the shoulders and narrows the torso. (J.Crew)

THE SHAWL COLLAR SWEATER
There's something about the shawl collar sweater that, upon wearing it, transforms a man into a refined gentleman. It is one that commands a gentle respect that only a dad deserves. Coming in a variety of textures, colors, and styles, these handsome pieces look best when kept simple. (Ralph Lauren RUGBY)

THE TRENCH COAT
Dating back to the First World War, the trenchcoat is an iconic piece of culture that was, historically, used for both functional and aesthetic purposes. Today, they are regarded as stylish staples essential for any wardrobe, giving individuals the freedom and versatility to dress up and down in a variety of different environments. From rustic taupes to creamy ivories, the range of styles and cuts are endless. If dad is the more casual sort of guy, try an olive, ash, or maroon. Just remember to get the proper fit! Higher armholes, slimmer arms, proper shoulders, and a length that goes no farther than just above the knees. (Burberry Brit)
