The Well Dressed Man (NOVEMBER 2011)

Check out my style feature "the Well-Dressed Man" (Page 44) in the November issue of SHARP magazine, featuring Johnny Depp!

Since winter seems to be getting more wet than snowy recently, what are some good boots that will keep me dry? I refuse to wear rain boots.
While we wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the notion of wearing rain boots, if you're looking for a pair of leather boots to withstand the slushy wrath of Mother Nature, you have some good options. Our pick: these military-style boots, which are made in Viberg's small family-run workshop on Vancouver Island.

Can you suggest a good pair of non-denim fall pants?
Corduroy is gaining popularity again, and fall is the perfect time to break some out. If it's pants you're looking for, find a slim-fitting flat-front pair with thin-to-medium wales (not thick ones) in khaki or light brown. They're as warm and comfortable as jeans, but still look relatively dress when worn with a blazer.

Are there any sunglasses specifically made for winter? Or can I just wear my summer frames to shield my eyes from the glare?
The levels and angles of light change with the seasons. As such, the sunglasses you wear during the summer may not be appropriate for winter conditions. You'll want to find a pair that wraps around and sits closer to the face to accommodate the lower angles of rays reflected from the snow. In addition, lenses with a fade are useful to help with the swift changes in sunlight throughout the day. Tom Ford's new Bachardy frames are great, with a slight curvature to the frame and a nice gradient in the lenses.

I'm trying to update my wardrobe on a limited budget. Can you suggest a few good quality things to start with?
Versatility should be your first priority when looking for clothes on a limited budget. Being able to create several different outfits out of one piece is key to expanding your wardrobe. The vest is one of the most versatile articles of clothing out there; available in a variety of colours, cuts and fabrics, it can be made to go with just about anything. Dress it up as a mix-matched three-piece suit, or down with some dark jeans and a button-down. Other essential items to consider: a pair of cognac brogues, a well-fitting merino or cashmere cardigan and a navy blazer.

It seems fashionable for women to wear fur again. Is the same thing true for guys? I'm not talking about a full-on fur coat, but maybe a fur collar or hat.
Fur is one of those things that pops in and out of the fashion cycle every so often, and seems to be enjoying another comeback of late. Real fur comes with its own set of ethical considerations but we won't delve into them here. Instead, we'll say that fur hats and fur-trimmed collars on men can look good (whether real, recycled or faux), provided they're worn with sufficient confidence.
